Welcome to Alban Federation, where we offer highly personalised, school-based teacher training in St Albans, Harpenden and across Hertfordshire. We offer both Secondary (trainees normally follow a 11-16 programme) and Primary training (trainees will follow a 5-11 programme).

There are still places available in Computer Science, and Physics for the training programme starting in September 2019 for suitably qualified applicants. The next Recruitment fair for applicants looking to start training in September 2020 will take place on Saturday 12th October 2019. The event will take place at Sandringham School, St Albans and run from 9:30am to 12pm.

Tuition fees have been set at £6900.

Places are listed on UCAS under Sandringham School (as lead school for the partnership) but any application may be considered by all Federation schools according to available places and applicant wishes.

Please contact the Federation team by phone (01727 799560 Ext 217) or email via ( if you require further information on any aspect of the application process.

What are the advantages of working with the Alban Federation?

Rated by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ (2012), Alban Federation has a depth of experience in teacher training, and has established partnerships with a wide spectrum of excellent schools in the region.

All the secondary schools in St Albans and Harpenden are members of Alban Federation and we also work with a number of associate partners in Brookmans Park, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford and Welwyn Garden City. Schools have developed expertise in delivering training and providing the highest level of support to trainees. In the past two years, all trainees have secured employment as NQTs.

Sandringham School in St Albans is the lead school for the partnership and is where the head office for the Alban Federation is located.

Do you qualify?

We are keen to engage with candidates who have a passion for their subject and the learning process, whilst wanting to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. If this describes you, get in touch and let us tell you how you can fulfil yours.

Applications will be accepted from October 2019 when the national window next opens.

Applicants must submit an application form via the DFE portal but should be aware of some other requirements.

A reminder that we require you to have obtained GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or above (or be registered for the appropriate equivalency test) at the time of application. Primary applicants will also require GCSE Science.

You must also register and sit the Professional Skills Tests for entrants to the profession as part of the application process. We recommend doing this as soon as possible once you have registered with UCAS.

All applicants who sat examinations overseas must have applied to NARIC for an equivalency check before applying for Federation training.

We're not around right now. But you can send us an email and we'll get back to you, asap.
